December 25th will mark the first day of Hanukkah this year, a celebration of the miraculous rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah, meaning “Dedication” in Hebrew, commemorates the Maccabees’ victory over religious persecution and the miracle of the menorah burning for eight days with only one day’s supply of oil.
This festival reminds us of light overcoming darkness. In 168 BCE, the Maccabees, led by the courageous Judah Maccabee, reclaimed the Temple from oppressive forces. Their victory and the miraculous oil inspire us to this day.
For Christians, Hanukkah holds profound significance. Jesus Himself observed Hanukkah (John 10), and its themes of light and dedication resonate deeply with His mission: “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).
We stand with Israel and the Jewish people, celebrating this season of miracles and dedication.
